Book Chapter on MCDA & SBR Accepted

„Integrating scenario-based reasoning into a multi-criteria decision support system for emergency management“ is the title of a book chapter that will be published in the book „Advanced ICTs for Disaster Management and Threat Detection: Collaborative and Distributed Frameworks” by Nik Bessis and Elena Asimakopoulou (eds.), IGI Global.

In this chapter, the Diadem partners Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and THALES describe challenges in decision making in emergency management and show how some of the occuring problems will be tackled within Diadem by combining scenarios and multi-attribute value theory, where the latter is a multi-criteria technique. While MCDA is a technique for decision support which aims at providing support for the resolution of complex decision situations taking into account multiple goals, SBR is applied to assess future developments when severe uncertainties prevail. The use of SBR is particularly meaningful in rare and unexpected events – such as emergencies – that defy standardized or statistical descriptions. Combining both techniques supports robust decision making, i.e., a decision that is not only optimal for one possible world development, but that performs well under a variety of conditions.
